What is abundance, do you ask? This is a question that many people struggle with. We think it is material things, such as a car, a house, a boat, electronics, and especially money. Then we think that it is family, friends, and neighbours. Then we think it is happiness, wholeness, love, caring, sharing, health, and all the wonderful things that go with it. Abundance of things, abundance of people, abundance of the immaterial. What else is there? Abundance of the spiritual - unconditional love, guidance, giving of and to ourselves. Right? Mostly right.
Abundance is a state of mind.
What did you say? Abundance is a state of mind.
I always thought that abundance was something that you had or could have, like what was mentioned before. Money. Love. Health. Family. Friends. These are all things that we can measure in some shape or form. Or at least know when we don't have it because we compare ourselves to others and see what they have and then we know we don't have it. Look at my neighbours, they have 4 big screen tvs, expensive cars in the driveway, a beautiful or handsome spouse, happy children, they are always going out, etc. But is this true abundance? If you look closely, they do have a mortgage, they do have many bills to pay and maybe not a thing in the bank. They are always worrying if they will be able to pay everything in the next month. This sounds like a lot of people, living from month to month, paycheque to paycheque doing the best they can.
I was watching TV the other day and happened to catch a show by Reverend Joel Osteen. I am not going to quote him here word for word, but I will explain as best I can the premise of the show. It was definitely about abundance.
He was telling us that God (or Source or Spirit, or whomever you feel comfortable with) will give us what we need when we need it. That what we have right now is what we need for right now. We have what we need to fulfil our lives whether it be family, friends, money, etc. Stop telling yourself that I will be happy if - I had a better job, I had better friends, I had more money, I was better looking or had a better personality, etc. We all tell ourselves these things as an excuse to keep in control of our lives or to tell ourselves why we don't have something. He also mentioned that if we had any more right now that we wouldn't be able to handle it right now. Yes, it is hard to wrap your head around that. I can handle more money, things, friends, etc. you say. But can you?
Rev. Osteen also mentioned that we were custom made by God. Each and every one of us. Custom made to do what we were meant to do and no more or no less. That is why we can handle what we can handle at any given time. We can keep growing, certainly, but at any given time we can only handle a certain number or amount of things. You might not be able to handle more friends, as an example, because you wouldn't have the time to put into those relationships at this time. You might not be able to handle more love, because you are not ready inside yourself. But as soon as you are, God will give you more.
Yes, you heard correctly, as soon as you need it, God will give you more. What is the catch, you are thinking. It depends, is it really a catch or a way to be free to live your life without worry or fear. God wants us all to be happy and fulfilled in all ways. All we have to do is honour him by allowing him to guide us to the best possible outcome in our lives. To do the best we can at any given time. Once we let go of the control (don't stop booking appointments, or doing what is necessary on a day to day basis) and follow our guidance - we all have that "gut feeling" that is always right and leads us to the answer we need. Another way to honour God is to follow whatever spiritual teachings that move you to be a better person and to be able to help others on their journey.
How does it all fit together? When we live abundantly, we are abundant. When we give up the idea that we can make things happen on their own without any help from God. When we finally realize that we have what we need when we need it. Trust. Trust in the love that God has for us and that He can lead us to everything we need for this moment in time.
I did have a hard time adjusting my thinking to this concept. It definitely makes sense. But how do I let go of control? One step at a time. Don't think of it as failure if you go back to the old ways of thinking. Just look at it as a temporary setback. Then start again. Rome wasn't built in a day, as the saying goes. But I want my abundance now. Right now is what the argument is. Divine timing comes into play and we will have to be patient and believe that God knows what we need when we need it. That the abundance of family, friends, health, wealth, love, happiness, shelter, will be provided. What I do differently than before is that I know that I am taken care of and that all that I need for now, for this season, for this moment is what I already have.
So what is abundance? It is a state of mind wherein we know that we have what we need when we need it. No more and no less.
